I think I’m talking Japanese…

When I think about where I want to travel to next, there are a few places that always spring to mind. Australia, for its friendly people, relaxed lifestyle, excellent weather and pristine beaches is a number one choice for most people. New Zealand, or as I like to call it, 1950s England, is also up there for many of the same reasons as Australia in addition to its epic scenery. The vibrant city of New York is also somewhere I would like to visit, and probably should have done when I was in Canada!
However, the one place that has intrigued me since I was a small boy, is Japan. The Asian culture is something that is vastly different from white culture and I feel like I need to experience it at some point. When one thinks about Japan, most of the time the type of imagery that is conjured up is that of modern cities, brimming with lights and technology and, in the case of Tokyo, that is undoubtedly true.
However, I also want to visit the real Japan. I want to see what the outlying villages are like and what rural Japanese life is like. I want to experience what the Japanese experience and not what the tourists experience. Although, I have to admit, a week or two in Tokyo would be amazing.
I want to travel throughout Japan, visiting as many of the small towns and the larger cities as I can and take it all in. I have been warned that it is a difficult place to visit because of the vast difference in culture and the language barriers, but that is hardly reason enough never to go. A working holiday visa to Japan sounds very, very tempting right now.
One last thing, I need to brag a little bit. I have just bought the most delightful newton running shoes that I have ever owned. As you all know I had completly knackered my old pair while I was going around Canada, and I have to say, I am rather pleased with this new purchase.
